If you’re hesitant to sign up because you don’t crochet, or if it’s been years since you’ve had a crochet hook in your hand, Allison is offering a FREE Beginning Crochet Class on Thursday August 8th, from 7:30 – 9:00pm (during Knit Night) for those who are signed up for the Granny Squares Class!! There’s no reason to miss out! Contact the shop at 801.615.0268 to reserve your spot.

Martha Stewart Baby Magazine, Fall 2002 – image by Gentl & Hyers

Have you ever given yourself permission to like something only after someone else, particularly someone you admire or look up to, likes it too? Years ago a dear friend asked me if I could crochet for her a bonnet like this one featured in the Fall 2002 Martha Stewart Baby magazine, sold by Bu and the Duck in New York City.

Seeing this simple, elegant and beautifully designed crochet baby hat adored by my very chic, very modern friend was like a light bulb going off in my head and to be honest, it changed my life. I had never seen something so beautiful before!  I didn’t understand that cherished techniques could be updated and that they were still relevant in a modern world. I come from a long line of women who have used their hands to make beautiful things, but at the time all the crochet and knitting I had seen was a little silly and old fashioned. This bonnet opened my eyes to how timeless beautiful handwork is and since then I’ve tried to share that love with others. Good design never, ever goes out of style.

I figured out how to make the bonnet, learning crochet techniques along the way. Recently, I designed a bonnet that is very similar in feel and design. I have a dear friend who is having twin girls very soon and these two bonnets, crocheted from lace weight baby alpaca yarn were her gift.

It is exciting for me to see timelessly elegant design cherished by thoroughly modern women. And it is exciting for me to teach others these techniques.
