Kids’ Sewing

Come learn basic sewing techniques in a fun atmosphere.  Possible projects: skirt, simple bag, patchwork quilt, etc.  Call Harmony for first class supplies. Ages 8-18.

Weaving 2.0

We will make a woven sampler while learning several different techniques, including hemstitching and leno, for future weaving projects.

Slumps, Grunts, Cobblers, Crisps, and Bettys

With fall’s fruit bounty of berries, peaches, and apples, it is time to extol the virtues of fruit crisps and cobblers because they are pie’s laid-back, sibling, the one whose arrival always brings applause. The fruit, which can be thickened or not because you are spooning it, not slicing it, and who cares if it slumps or puddles in the dish. There is always a crispy lid of crumbles or batter over the juicy fruit.

beginning crochet class flower project summer 2013

Beginning Crochet

Learn crochet basics (chain, slip stitch, single crochet, half-double crochet and double crochet) while making a lovely flower pin. Students receive a muslin drawstring bag and folder with illustrated instructions. Green yarn provided for leaves.  Class size limited to 4! Materials: One skein worsted weight yarn in desired flower color and 1 size H/8 5.0mm hook.

Paper Flowers

Get in-person instruction from Chelsey (owner of Rosy Paper Posies) as she helps you learn to create potted paper succulents to add that natural, modern touch to your home or to give as a personal and thoughtful gift to a teacher, friend, loved one, etc. This simple project will give you the skills to use paper succulents in a variety of projects! After this one-hour class, you will go home with a set of small potted paper succulents you have created and the pattern to make more for personal use. Bring: Hot Glue Gun, Hot Glue, Scissors

Sew Your Own Skirts

Class description: Learn to sew a beautiful skirt using just your own measurements. We’ll be sewing a gathered skirt with a waistband (choose a zipper closure or elastic in the back), any length you like, and best of all, pockets! You can choose to make one for yourself, your daughter, anyone you like as long as you have their waist measurements and the approximate length.  This is a beginner apparel sewing class. If you can sew a straight line, you can make this skirt!

Materials: 2-4 yards woven (cotton, linen, chambray, rayon, etc.) fabric. You can do a child’s skirt in as little as one yard. I will be at class early to help you choose fabric and determine yardage if you wish.  If you’d like to sew a zipper in your skirt, bring a 7 to 9 inch all-purpose zipper and a zipper foot. If you’d prefer an elastic waist, bring a package of elastic 1-2 inch elastic. Also bring thread, pins, seam ripper, scissors, basic sewing notions.

Beginning Continental Knitting for Adults

Learn basic knitting and purling in the Continental style. We will also learn a basic cast-on and cast-off and use these skills to make a dishcloth and a cute cowl. Dishcloth yarn will be provided by instructor. Students provide: 200 yards Aran-weight yarn, a 16” size 8 circular knitting needle, tapestry needle, scissors, measuring tape/ruler, knitting ring place markers, and a pen.

Stash & Dash Bag

Stash and Dash is a fun roll-up zippered bag.  This class will teach you the basics of bag-making: quilting your fabric, sewing in zippers, working with mesh and binding techniques.  It’s a perfect afternoon project that’s great for gift giving. More Weaving Techniques aka Weaving 3.0

Adventure Knitting Camp

Add some fun, thrills, and excitement to your knitting in our Adventure Knitting Camp. Step out of your comfort zone to learn some fun and unusual techniques to add to your knitting backpack of skills. We won’t be fording streams or rappelling mountains, but we will be making some nifty gifts to take back to our loved ones at home. Roasted marshmallows—who knows?

Intermediate knitting skills required: Ability to cast-on and cast-off, knit and purl, read and follow a pattern, swatch to get gauge, and decrease and increase comfortably.

Dropped-Stitch Shawl.  Sat. October 21, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. (2 hrs.)

Requirements: 1 size #8 24” circular needle, 820 yards of a smooth-textured sock yarn (variegated or solid-color), stitch markers, scissors, measuring tape, blunt-tipped darning needle, large post-it notes, pencil or pen

Reversible Brioche Two-Colored Hat.  Sat. October 28, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. (2 hrs.)

Requirements: 1 size #8 16” circular needle, 2 skeins of worsted-weight yarn in contrasting colors, stitch markers, scissors, measuring tape, blunt-tipped darning needle, large post-it notes, pencil or pen

Mosiac Cowl.  Sat. November 4, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. (2 hrs.)

Requirements: 1 size #7 circular needle, 2 skeins of worsted-weight yarn in contrasting colors (can use the rest of the yarn from Class #2 if desired), stitch markers, scissors, measuring tape, blunt-tipped darning needle, large post-it notes, pencil or pen

Open Wide Bag

Open Wide is a great pattern with 3 different sizes of cosmetic bags, perfect for travel and organization.  The pattern includes some quick slip mesh pockets inside and a neat zipper method, as well as other bag-making tips. Please have pattern pieces cut and quilted before the class. Materials list and pattern information are available at Harmony.

Granny Square Class

Learn to crochet a timeless classic.  We will learn circular crochet motifs, changing colors, weaving in ends as you go, and joining techniques.  Basic crochet skills required.  Materials: Bring several different colors of DK or worsted weight yarn, size F/5 3.75 mm hook (DK) or size H/8 5.0 mm hook (worsted), scissors, and a tapestry needle.

Weaving 101

Learn to weave on a rigid heddle loom.  Students will warp their loom in class and begin to weave a scarf.  They will work on the scarf at home then complete it in class.  Students will begin a second project at home, with the third class for trouble shooting.  Looms will be available to purchase or rent at 20% off; rental fee can be applied to purchase price.  Supplies: two 50-gram balls of worsted weight yarn for a skinny (5”) scarf, or two 100-gram balls for a 7-8” wide scarf.  Class size limited to 4!
