New Kids Club Page on the Site

We’ve added a new page on our website with information about the Harmony Knit and Crochet Kids Club! If you look in the upper right hand corner of your screen, you should see a “Kids Club” tab that will take you to a page with info about our fun knit and crochet club for kids. Our purpose in creating the Kids Club was to create a space where motivated kids who wanted encouragement to start and finish crochet and knit projects could come and socialize with other kids doing the same thing. Take a minute to check out the page!

There are some fun things going on at the shop this month and next! For more information, visit the “Fall Class List” page on our website.

Sew, Knit, LEARN!

(floral fabric from Harmony)

By Allison Barnes

I once met a woman whose home shone with creativity, light, and wellness. Chickens plucked away around the green Tennessee hills surrounding her home; old wooden frames graced her walls, filled with the scenes she had painted herself over the years; and in the adjoining sun room was her studio, piled with projects and scattered with potentials. There was the loom, the spinning wheel, the sewing machines, and blank canvases (or re-purposed canvases). When she grew too weak to work in the studio (for her health and strength were not always consistent) she curled up in bed with her knitting projects. And, as God had given her these talents, she willingly gave her creations away to the people she loved (myself included, and I am so grateful).

Her creative spirit is one I’ve tried to emulate in my own life. When life feels like it’s dragging, I begin projects (and finish most of them) and life feels a little bit lighter again. When someone else feels like their life is dragging, I head to the kitchen and bake, because cookies tend to make days just a little bit easier to bare. Creativity fills my soul in the loveliest of ways, and those are skills worth developing and pursuing.

Last week I practiced calligraphy. This week I’m trying out a recipe for Honey-Roasted Veggies + Gnocchi. Next week I’m planning on attending a crocheting class here at Harmony, because I haven’t crocheted since I was a little girl and I want to pick it up again. And next month I’m signed up for a paddleboard-yoga class, so we’ll see how that goes!

Harmony’s motto is sew, knit, learn, and I’m trying to do just that!

What have you learned lately? What new skill or hobby have you tried your hand at?

There are still a few more spring classes left before our summer classes begin! Sign up today by coming into the shop or calling (801) 615-0268. For more information, visit harmonyprovo.com.

In Honor Of Our Glorious Grandmas

In honor of all our glorious grandmas, great aunts, and grand mentors – why not learn a new skill? Or take out and dust off a skill that has lain hidden under all the other important things that demand our attention and time? Skills that you probably learned at their knees? Obviously, there are times and seasons for all things. Yet, because necessity does not demand it, we are allowing the time honored skills of our ancestor women to slip from prominence to oblivion.

Skills that elevate and beautify our surroundings, teach us empathy and patience, and allow us productive meditation.

Skills that allow for creative expression and artistic license.

Skills that demanded time together, side by side, in order to teach a beautiful tradition. But that are no longer being passed down from mothers to children.

Skills like dress-making & quilting, crochet & knitting, embroidery, penmanship and calligraphy, gardening, baking and cooking, sketching & painting, letter writing and journal keeping.

In honor of our grandmas, this Mother’s Day, why not resolve to learn yourself or teach these skills to your sons and daughters, nieces and nephews, students, or friends? These skills are worth preserving.

Show us how you and your children are preserving these skills on Instagram (@harmonyprovo and @darlybird) and Twitter
